At the end of the 1930s in Prague, Karel Kopfrkingl, a zealous employee at a crematorium who regards his work as a public good, and an irreproachable family man, is gradually seduced by the Nazi ideas of his friend, Willy. When the country is invaded and annexed by Hitler, his vision of the world starts to change... quite radically.
